Physician and caregiver perspectives on the use of medical cannabis in children with autism

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that significantly impacts children and their families. An increasing number of families and healthcare professionals are inquiring about the use of medical cannabis for children with autism, however, there is limited evidence to guide healthcare professionals on things like product selection, appropriate dosing, safety and overall effectiveness.

To address these gaps, we are conducting a mixed-methods study using surveys and interviews with pediatricians and caregivers of children with ASD.

The objectives of this study are to:

  1. gather experiences of medical cannabis use in children with autism

  2. explore perceptions of the risks and benefits of medical cannabis in autism

  3. identify considerations to inform future research and educational resources

This study will improve our understanding of physician and caregiver experiences, attitudes, and concerns about the use of medical cannabis in children with autism in Canada.

April 2026 update
